This blog has been rather quiet the last while. This is because I'm presently on leave, and enjoying the rest, giving my brain some time off, and catching up on some light and frivolous reading. Yesterday was different, though. My wife, Debbie, and I joined a group from the University of the Third Age here in Knysna to listen to Prof. John De Gruchy speak about Dietrich Bonhoeffer (You can check out one of John's notable books here: The Cambridge Companion to Dietrich Bonhoeffer (Cambridge Companions to Religion)). Prof. De Gruchy is one of the foremost experts on Bonhoeffer in the world today, and he gave a simple overview of the life of the man, and his impact on theological thinking in the last century. It was good to reconnect with a theologian that I had studied at university, but had not really spent much time with since.
In addition to the joy of being present for the lecture, I also got a chance to meet with John after the talk. We had about five minutes chatting about his books, and his current work and life, and I introduced him to the work that I am doing and spoke about some of my dreams for my future. He was so engaging and open, and we had a really good time together. It seems there may even be some possibilities for us to do some work together in some small way in the future. Wow! Don't I hope that comes off!
Thanks Prof. for your wisdom and knowledge, and for sharing it so freely. And thanks, also, for taking time to chat with a total stranger and make my day memorable.
